North Beach Place
These two blocks in San Francisco, where North Beach meets Fisherman's Wharf, were home to 229 public housing units.
The developer - a partnership of BRIDGE Housing, the John Stewart Company, and Em Johnson Interest - retained ECB to manage the development process following years of delays and political controversy. ECB efficiently established the project schedule, fully formed the design team and refined the design approach, obtained entitlements, met all financing deadlines and re-established trust and communication with residents. The $100 million development was successfully constructed on schedule and within budget.
The design by Barnhart Associates Architects satisfied a significant challenge: creating a sense of individual ownership while increasing the development's density. The outcome: 341 affordable apartments in a highly desirable neighborhood. The development includes a childcare center, dedicated senior building, "business incubator" center, extensive community facilities and nearly 20,000 square feet of neighborhood for retail uses, including the only Trader Joe's store to be built in an affordable housing development.
